Crowds that had gathered in central London were sent into raptures as it was announced that London had won the 2012 Olympic Games after an 18 month battle with Paris. The games, the crowds were told by an elated Tony Blair, would bring unforetold riches to the city; world class sports facilities, higher house prices and a ‘lasting Olympic legacy’*.
